As we approach the final few weeks before the NBA’s scheduled return to play, the road to get there doesn’t appear to be getting any smoother. More and more issues are coming up that further complicate the arrangements being made for the league to resume. Gordon Hayward’s situation adds yet wrinkle to it all.
As Celtics staff writer Jared Weiss reports, the Celtics’ wing player will prioritize family over any on-court activities. Gordon Hayward’s wife is currently pregnant and his scheduled to give birth in the thick of the bubble playoffs.
If those stars align, the Boston Celtics will be down one of their all-star caliber players.

But as a lot of players have shown during this run-up to the return of play, family ultimately comes first.
Hayward had more to say about the dilemma as well.
Hayward: “Leaving the girlies is going to be a hard day for me. Theyâre old enough now that they do understand whatâs going on and they know Iâm going to be gone for awhile. The opportunity to compete for a championship is something that a lot of us NBA players want to do.”
While it seems somewhat straightforward now, it could become a complex issue when the time indeed comes.
If Boston is still alive after Hayward is finished and fully-quarantined, can he return? Will the Celtics be allowed a replacement player if ever Hayward isn’t allowed back? Questions like these and many more will arise given the newness and complexity of this on-site return of the NBA.
