The eight NBA teams outside of the Disney World bubble that have been eliminated from the restart of the 2019-20 season won’t get to hold the summer tournament some had aspired to get in recent negotiations with the league.
Some eliminated teams had hoped for a tournament between the “Delete Eight” to make up for the long layoff amid the coronavirus pandemic. That won’t be happening, according to Marc Berman of the New York Post, considering there is no way to make teams comply with the same stringent protocols the NBA has rolled out for the 22 teams in Orlando.
Those same eliminated teams will also not be allowed to hold “mandatory” organized team activities (OTAs).
Michele Roberts, the National Basketball Players Association executive director, hinted some concerns over OTAs for these eight teams during Fridayâs conference call, but didnât fully rule out the possibility:
âCandidly, while I appreciate that there will be a bit of a layoff, I think there are some things these teams can do to get the guys that are not playing some [benefit] by their not being involved in Orlando,ââ Roberts said. âBut unless we could replicate in every way the protocol thatâs been established for Orlando, Iâd be â Iâm being tame now â suspicious.â
Several NBA players have tested positive for the coronavirus in recent weeks, even with the highly controlled environment in their own practice facilities and the strict safety guidelines to allow players to work out and shake off the rust.
