The NBA has 22 teams going to Orlando for its rebooted season that will begin July 31, but many teams left out of the restart want organized functions during the offseason to help remain active.
According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, “several teams” that will not be in Orlando have presented ideas that include regional summer leagues, training camps and organized team activities to help their players continue growing over the long layoff.
Per Wojnarowski, Dec. 1 was the initial possible date for the start of the 2020-21 season. But The Athletic’s Shams Charania reported Friday that the Dec. 1 date is “unlikely.”
The eight teams not going to Orlando are the Golden State Warriors, Atlanta Hawks, Cleveland Cavaliers, Minnesota Timberwolves, New York Knicks, Detroit Pistons, Charlotte Hornets and Chicago Bulls. They haven’t played in a meaningful game since the league shut down in the middle of March.

The Cavs and Pistons have reportedly talked about having joint practices before having a small set of games in a potential regional summer league, per Wojnarowski.
Along with the joint practices and regional summer leagues, teams have also proposed organized team activities for mid-September. Teams also want its training camps to have a chance at beginning 7-10 days earlier for whenever the 2020-21 season starts.
