The Cleveland Cavaliers intend to sign point guard Cameron Payne to a 10-day contract, according to a report from Shams Charania of Stadium.
The Cavs are releasing shooting guard Patrick McCaw, signed to a two-year deal last week. McCaw’s release is opening a roster spot.
UPDATE: The Cavaliers have officially announced both the Payne signing and waiving of McCaw.
Payne was waived by the Chicago Bulls two days ago. The Cavs are hoping he can help with ball-handling duties as usual backup Matthew Dellavedova is out with a sprained foot.
The former lottery pick has averaged 5.7 points and 2.7 assists while primarily coming off the bench in 31 games. He was originally drafted by the Oklahoma City Thunder with the No. 14 overall selection in 2015.
He was traded to the Bulls in 2016-17, but appeared in just 25 games last season after undergoing foot surgery.
Payne was primarily stuck behind Kris Dunn (when healthy) and Ryan Arcidiacono in the Bulls’ point-guard pecking order this year.
