The Washington Wizards have signed former New York Knicks guard Ron Baker.
According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, the Wizards are waving Okaro White in a related move.
Last week, the Knicks released Ron Baker from the team. This was in order to make room for rookie sensation Allonzo Trier, who signed a two-year, $7 million contract with New York. The team had Trier on a two- way contract and had to sign him to an actual long-term NBA deal. Two-way contracts only allow for players to be on an NBA team’s roster for 45 days before being sent down to the G League or bought out.
Baker had gone undrafted in 2016 after four years with the Wichita State Shockers. New York signed him onto their Summer League squad. After seeing something they like, Baker ended up signing a long-term deal the Knicks.
In his rookie year, Baker played 16.5 minutes a game, averaging 4.1 points, 1.9 rebounds and 2.1 assists while shooting 37.8 percent from the field.
It was nothing special, but Baker became sort of a folk hero for Knicks fans, especially when he hurt his eye-ball socket after a hard hit. He proved to be the likable, gritty point guard New York needed when they were attempting to tank for a better draft pick.
This season, the Knicks had hardly given Baker any minutes at all. He’s consistently been the last man in the rotation, only getting minutes in a blowout or when the Knicks have been far ahead. Baker had only averaged 1.3 points and 1.2 assists while playing 9.7 minutes per contest.
The Wizards are 12-19 on the season and are ranked 11th in the NBA’s Eastern Conference. They will play the Houston Rockets Wednesday evening in the Lone Star state.
