This move comes just two days after the Thunder waived Roby on Sunday. Roby began his professional career when the Detroit Pistons selected him 45th overall in the 2019 NBA Draft. He was traded to the Dallas Mavericks and assigned to the team’s G League affiliate, the Texas Legends.
Roby joined the Thunder in 2020 in a trade in exchange for Justin Patton and cash considerations. He made his NBA debut with the Thunder before rejoining the G League, this time with the Oklahoma City Blue.
Roby hasn’t had many opportunities in the NBA, starting in 62 of his 109 games in the league. However, he proved himself worthy of a chance to work with Spurs stars like fellow power forward Keldon Johnson.
Last season, Roby started in 28 of the 45 games he played for the Thunder. He averaged 21.1 minutes, 10.1 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 1.6 assists in 2021. Roby drastically improved his three-point accuracy, going from 29.4% in 2020 to 44.4% last season.
Hopefully, Roby will be able to help the Spurs get out of their slump, especially with the recent Dejounte Murray trade with the Atlanta Hawks. The franchise hasn’t been to the NBA Playoffs since the 2018-2019 season. Last season, the Spurs finished 10th in the Western Conference with a 34-48 regular season record.
