Boston Celtics guard Marcus Smart has been suspended one game without pay for "directing threatening language toward a game official" during Tuesday's 119-115 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder, the NBA announced Wednesday.
Smart, 27, will serve his suspension when the Celtics host the Charlotte Hornets at Boston's TD Garden on Wednesday. He'll forfeit $89,000 in wages, according to ESPN's Bobby Marks.
The seven-year pro directed remarks toward referees both during and following Tuesday's loss after he was assessed a technical foul with 7:48 left in the fourth quarter.
This isn't Smart's first incident involving referees. He was fined $35,000 last March "for confronting and verbally abusing the game officials" following an overtime loss to the Brooklyn Nets. The league's statement regarding that penalty referenced "multiple prior violations of acceptable on-court decorum."
Smart was also docked $15,000 for criticizing officials following a defeat to the Milwaukee Bucks in the Walt Disney World bubble last August. Smart claimed referees were making calls in favor of Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo.
The Celtics will get Jayson Tatum and Robert Williams back for their clash with the Hornets, while Kemba Walker will miss a second successive game due to a left oblique injury.
