Being the two most prominent players on the Brooklyn Nets roster, Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving are heavily involved in the team’s search for their next head coach.
According to no less than Nets general manager Sean Marks, the front office has been in constant communication with both guys asking for their inputs on the ongoing coaching search.
âIt would not be smart of us if we were not to involve some of these key players in this decision,â the Nets GM said, via Brian Lewis of the New York Post. âKevin, Kyrie, weâre going to pick their brains on what theyâre looking for in a leader, what they need. Theyâve been brutally honest so far.”
Jacque Vaughn has taken the helm as the team’s interim head coach following the removal of Kenny Atkinson from his post. While Vaughn is considered by many as the front runner to take over the opening on a more permanent arrangement, it has become apparent that what both Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving think of him will play a pivotal role on his future with the squad.
However, this does not mean that the Nets will be sending their two superstars to Florida to help assess Vaughn’s performance. Brooklyn continues to take a very cautious approach in bringing back the pair, who are both coming off significant injury layoffs.
â[Irving] is doing well. But like Kevin, you have to look at the risk-reward. When you have a lot of money and your future tied to a couple guys â the whole team, but these two guys are an integral part of it â they havenât had the appropriate buildup,â Marks added. âThe last thing you want to do is put these guys out there when they havenât had the appropriate workload and buildup.â
