The Nets came into June with a pair of first-round draft picks, but by the end of the NBA draft they had traded away both.
That doesn’t mean Nic Claxton isn’t determined to prove they landed a player Thursday night at Barclays Center.
After dealing the 17th pick two weeks ago and the 27th pick on draft night, Brooklyn held onto the No. 31 pick and selected Georgia’s Claxton, who could provide some much-needed frontcourt depth.
“I just want to show people I can play,” Claxton said in a TV interview. “A lot of people think I’m a project, which is fine. But I just want to go out there and show people I can play and contribute in a major way.”
In exchange for the No. 27 pick the Nets had gotten from Denver in a salary dump, they extracted a 2020 first-rounder (originally Philadelphia’s) and the 56th pick they used on UCLA point guard Jaylen Hands.
The first pick in the second round — originally the Knicks’ selection — might turn out to be the most valuable piece of the Nets’ trade that shipped Trevor Booker to Philadelphia for Jahlil Okafor and Nik Stauskas. On Thursday, the Nets turned that pick into Claxton, who had no fewer than 30 friends and family in Barclays Center.
With key backup center Ed Davis potentially leaving in free agency and a glaring hole at power forward, Claxton — who can face the basket and put the ball on the floor — could actually earn some minutes.
The 6-foot-10, 220-pound Claxton was a late bloomer. He wasn’t a top-100 high school recruit and averaged just 3.9 points as a freshman. But last season he made a quantum leap forward, averaging 13.0 points, 8.6 rebounds and 2.5 blocks.
A long, agile big man with a 7-foot-wingspsan, Claxton has good genes. His father, Charles, was All-SEC and played briefly for the Celtics. Now he’s headed to the NBA as well.
“A lot of that just comes from me keeping God first and just keeping that chip on my shoulder, going out there and proving myself every day,” Claxton said. “And I’m going to do the same thing in the NBA and I can’t wait to get started.”
Hands averaged 14.2 points and a Pac 12-leading 6.1 assists.
The Clippers used the 27th pick on FSU’s Mfiondu Kabengele.
