The Miami Heat have waived swingman Rodney McGruder, according to Ira Winderman of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.
McGruder was informed of the move following the Heat’s overtime loss to the Toronto Raptors on Sunday, Winderman reported. McGruder played 23 minutes.
“McGruder became a victim of a last-gasp attempt by the Heat to avoid the NBA luxury tax for this season and the punitive repeater tax going forward,” Winderman wrote.
Teams had until 5 p.m. EST Sunday to waive contracts and get under the tax line.
As Winderman explained, McGruder would have to be claimed off waivers “for the Heat to achieve tax relief.”
If not claimed, McGruder will enter the offseason as an unrestricted free agent. McGruder is 6-foot-4 and averaged 7. points and 3.6 rebounds in 65 games this season.
He has spent all three years of his pro carer with the Heat.
In order to reach the league-minimum of 14 players, the Heat signed rookie two-way forward Yante Maten to a standard contract, Winderman reported.
