Bucks’ Brook Lopez breaks Channing Frye’s single-season record for most 3-pointers by a center

Milwaukee Bucks center Brook Lopez continued to shoot himself into the history books during Sunday’s win over the Cleveland Cavaliers. He knocked down four triples in the victory, and in the process set the new single-season record for three-pointers made (176) in a season by a center, per StatMuse, breaking the mark previously set by current Cavalier Channing Frye back in 2009-10 when he was a member of the Phoenix Suns.
Lopez’s career renaissance has been nothing short of remarkable. As the NBA landscape has changed around him, Lopez realized that being a big man who was unable to shoot made him a dying breed. Having remastered his game, Lopez now has the validation of his gamble, in addition to a pretty sweet gig as the starting center on a team with the NBA’s best record.
Lopez attempted just seven threes combined in his first six professional seasons; he made none of them. Fast-forward two years after that, and at least he had three makes under his belt. Ever since 2016-17, his final of his nine seasons with the Brooklyn Nets, Lopez has become a three-point marksman.
Entering play Sunday, Lopez was averaging 2.4 made threes per game. His 12.5 points per game average is far below his peak low-block seasons with Brooklyn, but he has started all 74 games that Milwaukee has played in 2018-19. In addition to his long-range shooting, Lopez is also on pace to set a new career high with 2.3 blocks per contest, giving a whole new meaning to the idea of a ‘3-and-D’ player.
